When Joseph Bodnar of Bodnar’s Auction started working in the auction industry as a runner in 1992 at a local auction house, he couldn’t imagine what was to come in the future. Never in his wildest dreams did he think he would grow a large auction house and along the way, pick up lifelong customers. One of those customers was in the crowd on his first day as a runner at that local auction house. He and his wife followed Joe when he opened his first auction in a parking lot in Bound Brook, NJ, then to the Elks Club, and to Somerset, NJ and finally to his location at the NJ Convention and Expo Center when he grew too large to fit into the Somerset location. So, when the call came that the husband had passed away and his wife that spent so many years putting a collection together with him was ready to let the collection go, it was a sad moment for Mr. Bodnar.  However, he was more than willing and ready to assist her on this part of her journey.

He met with her at her home in Piscataway in early July and had no idea what he was in store for. Walking downstairs, he was instantly transported into a world of early advertising. Liquor and beer advertising to be specific. “I have never seen a collection this large” stated Joe upon seeing the collection. “It is as impressive as it is large”. Typically, every sale has some type of liquor and beer advertising, and there have been more than a few actual collections that have crossed the auction block at Bodnar’s Auction. This one is like none other. There are the normal pitchers you would expect in a collection. However, this collection has thousands and from almost every liquor maker you can think of. There are fantastic wooden shipping crates, napkin and straw holders, early neon signs, tin advertising signs and the large bottle advertising that you would normally see in a collection. Even though the size and scope of that portion of the collection is enough to warrant a sale, this is where it begins, not ends.

It begins with hundreds of early whiskey jugs from makers such as Royal Salute, Tullamore Dew, Cullamore Dew, Glen Garry, Old Mull, The Kintore, Cruiskeen Lawn, The Graybeard, Allman & Co, Royal Stag Jeroboam, Glen Lake, Ramsays and King’s Ransom. There are some impressive early pieces such as early John Dewer jugs, a Royal Doulton Kingsware Dewar’s Bonnie Prince Charlie flask and multiple early Royal Doulton Lambeth Highland Whiskey jugs. There are also unique Ricard Anisette pitchers. Rounding out this section are multiple Royal Doulton The McCallum toby mugs.

Next up in this fantastic collection is all of the figural liquor bar-back advertising. There are multiple Heineken chalkware displays, multiple Prince Charlie figural lamps from companies such as Drambuie, many Dewers figural displays, multiple Carstairs seal displays, multiple Early Times Bourbon car and train displays, Hennessey dog displays, a Kirin Beer metal logo, multiple Johnnie Walker figural displays, an Old Crow display, a Cutty Sark ship display, multiple Beefeater figural displays, multiple Old Grandad busts, a Pabst Blue Ribbon bartender display, a Martin’s Scotch display, multiple Schmidt’s figural displays, a Hampton Ale figural display, a fantastic Piels Bert & Harry display, a great Pabst old red car display,  a Pfeiffer’s figural display and so many more there is just not enough time to name them all!

Lastly there are multiple early advertising signs including but not limited to multiple early Pabst Blue Ribbon signs, Schaefer, Genesee 12 Horses, Heineken, Neuweller, Schmidt’s, Rheingold, Blatz, Black & White, Coors and more! There are also clocks like the early Calvert model as well as from makers such as Coors, Miller Light and more! Fantastic desk light advertising, and unique light up displays round out this truly impressive collection.
