Lot 151:
Description
Grouping of letters from DeWitt C Kells. Dewitt enlisted in the Union Navy despite his confederate sympathies as he did not believe war and the destruction of the Union was worth party lines. Kells was a Lieutenant Commander and was cited for bravery under fire around Mobile Bay in 1864. He was involved in an attempt to ignite another war with Mexico and was removed from his command in 1875. The letter is in Feb 1860 when he was in Boston. He writes to a Hellen who appears to be his sweetheart. He writes of speaking to the widow of Capt. de Castro and informing her of his death, the tone of Boston at the time to which he calls an “irrepressible conflict”. The second letter is in March of 1860 and he in on a boat bound for Cuba. He stated he could not wait for the warm weather to find him in Boston, so he pursued the weather. He writes how the Captain of the boat is old and deaf and he is afraid for them all. The last letter is dated 1861 (month appears to be January but the dates do not coincide with the events). He writes again to Helen (Nellie) from the Brooklyn Navy yard and is answering her charge of calling him a man with no principle. He writes how he was a successionist once but after a strike commenced and degenerated into a war, it is the duty of every American to let go of party fractions and friends and maintain the Union of the United States at any cost. He states there will be none so poor if we let our country fall apart and be divided. Also included are photos but unfortunately they are not identified. All pages have wear and discoloration from age. The last letter has a tear to the back. All invoices must be paid within 24 hours of the sale. We offer multiple shipping options please read the shipping terms to understand your options. We also offer Pick-Ups Friday, Saturday, and Monday immediately following the sale. BY APPOINTMENT ONLY.

Get StartedI’m happy with everything Joe and Janet did, you were both informative and were very helpful with the questions I had being that I was never in that position before. Janet’s response time was also positive for me. It was interesting to watch the auction live. I thought you did an amazing job and had a nice banter back and forth. You seem to be a good team! Thank you for all your hard work and making this difficult time of letting my deceased father’s collectibles go an easy experience.
I would like to thank you for including me in your online sale.
Everything from none contact drop off, to none contact pick up, was handled with the outmost professionalism.
I appreciated your clear communication after the sale with a printout and an explanation of when I’ll receive my check.
Overall I was very please with the prices my jewelry achieved, some lot went for less then I expected, others went for more, it’s all in the average.
Thank you very much
I come to your auctions often. You and your staff are great. Your change to an online auction on 4/9 is just another testament to your fine character and being thoughtful of others. The items are great no doubt, but a big reason I keep coming back is due to the culture you have created. Thank you. Art
