Antique Oak U.S. Post Office Teller Window - Corbin Cabinet Lock Co.
Description
This antique oak post office teller station and sorting screen was manufactured by the Corbin Cabinet Lock Co. of New Britain, Connecticut. Constructed from oak with a prominent molded cornice, the unit is organized into three primary vertical sections. The central section features a teller window with vertical metal bars situated above a rectangular pass-through opening. Below this, a wooden panel is fitted with a textured brass mail drop slot marked U.S. MAIL. A large, ornate cast brass plaque is mounted above the window and is inscribed U POST S OFFICE, CORBIN CABINET LOCK CO., NEW BRITAIN, CONN., U.S.A. The plaque is further decorated with a series of stars along the top and bottom edges. Flanking the central window are two vertical glass-fronted panels that provide a view of the internal sorting cubbies. These cubbies are fitted with small numbered brass tags, including visible numbers 3, 4, 11, 21, and 38. The reverse side of the station reveals an extensive grid of sorting pigeonholes. Many of these compartments retain their original wire dividers used for organizing correspondence. All invoices must be paid within 24 hours of the sale.
