Neoclassical Temple Form Banded Onyx Mantel Clock
Description
A Neoclassical mantel clock designed in the form of a temple, featuring a case constructed from polished banded onyx in shades of cream and golden yellow. The structure includes a gabled pediment centered with a patinated and gilt metal mount depicting a Medusa mask flanked by scrolling foliate motifs. The central housing for the movement is flanked by two recessed bays containing patinated metal figures of knights in full suits of armor; the left figure holds a halberd while the right figure rests a hand on a sword. Four fluted onyx columns with patinated metal capitals and bases support the upper structure, all resting on a multi-tiered rectangular onyx base. The circular dial features an ornate gilt filigree center surrounded by an outer ring of white porcelain cartouches with black Roman numerals. The dial is protected by a hinged bezel. The rear of the clock reveals a mechanical brass movement with a coiled wire gong strike. A circular mark is stamped into the upper portion of the rear movement plate, but the characters within it are not legible as a specific name. The serial number 2474 is stamped into the brass plate below this mark, and the same number 2474 is written in pencil on the upper right corner of the rear onyx panel. Front crystal is cracked and backplate needs to be reattached, some areas of the marble have rough edging on the corners and warping.. Measures 12.5 inches tall by 16 inches long.
