Magic the Gathering Collection Sells for over $600,000.00 at Bodnar’s Auction!
On February 18, 2021 Bodnar’s Auction sold 414 lots of a single owner estate collection of Magic the Gather cards for just over $600,000.00, making it one of the best grossing single owner collections in Bodnar’s 29 years of conducting auctions. When the collection came into the auction firm, Bodnar’s knew right from the get go that the collection was important but never did they relieze it would exceed the $200,000.00-$400,000.00 pre-auction estimate.
Bodnar’s sent most of the collection out to Beckett grading in Dallas Texas to have them slabbed and graded. An amour car service was used to transport the collection to and from the auction to the grading firm, a first-time experience for them as well some of the winning lots also were delivered in the same manor. This collection featured complete sets of the game from the Alpha & Beta sets as well as the first 10 years in production.
The highlight of the sale was a Black Lotus R A – Alpha Set 1993. Beckett Graded 7.5 Near Mint+. Centering 9, Edges 8, Corners 7 and Surface 9. Serial #0012507975 selling for an impressive $64,900.00. Two other graded Black Lotus cards with lower grades sold for $41,300.00 and $25,960.00. A Timetwister R B – Alpha Set 1993 Beckett Graded 8.5 NM-MT+. Centering 8.5, Edges 8.5, Corners 8.5 and Surface 9. Serial #0012507977 sold for $14,160.00. Several graded 9.5 gem mint cards sold well over estimate including a Contract from Below R K – Alpha Set 1993. Beckett Graded 9.5 Gem Mint. Centering 9.5, Edges 9.5, Corners 9.5 and Surface 9.5. Serial #0012508247 sold for $8260.00 against its $750.00-$1500.00 estimate. Several cards that indicated they had color added sold well like a Mox Pearl – Alpha 1993 – Evidence of Color Added to the top corner. No Grade given due to added color sold for $7375.00 against a $100.00-$300.00 estimate. Sets did very well with a 7th Edition Foil Set – 2001 – Complete – 350 Cards sold for $10,620.00. Urza’s Destiny – 1999 – Complete Set sold for $5310.00, and a Urza’s Legacy Foil Set – 1999 – Complete sold for $5605.00.
All 414 lots sold close to the high estimate or above. All lots were offered online only with a live broadcast of the sale on liveauctioneers.
